2011 USD Law/Grad Halloween Party

Barfly, La Jolla, CA

909 Prospect Street

San Diego, CA 92037

Saturday, October 29 at 9:00pm - October 30 at 2:00am

It's that Eerie time of year again and you know what that means (no, not time to study for civil procedure): USD Law/Grad's annual Halloween Party! We are holding the event this year at Barfly in La Jolla on Saturday, October 29th. We reserved the entire venue for USD Law and Grad students (and their guests) so we will not have any complications like last year. Everyone with a ticket is GUARANTEED entrance by midnight and dare I say it, a scary good time.

**THIS EVENT WILL SELL OUT JUST LIKE LAST YEAR SO MAKE SURE YOU PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS NOW! **

Once you buy your ticket, print your receipt and bring it the night of the party. We will have our own list of everyone who purchased tickets, but things will go faster if we see your receipt. You may bring guests, but all guests need to have a ticket. If you want to bring a guest, buy their tickets at the same time you buy yours...that way, we can check you and your guests off the list at the same time and avoid a long line. Besides Halloween, efficiency is the theme of this party!

We have confirmed locations for the buses. The Mission Valley bus will be at the Gordon Biersch parking lot near the 8 Fwy (http://maps.google.com/maps?f= l&hl=en&q&near=5010+Mission+Ce nter+Road+San+Diego%2C+CA+9210 8). The Pacific Beach bus will be at the Staples parking lot on Garnet (http://www.yelp.com/biz/staple s-san-diego-2).

We will be distributing wristbands for those who have already bought tickets, today (10/27) and Friday (10/28) in the Writs. We'll be there 12 - 5pm today, and 1 - 5pm on Friday. Just bring your receipt or student ID, and you can pick up wristbands for all the tickets you bought. If you don't pick up your wristbands ahead of time, you can still check in at the door on Saturday night. Getting your wristbands early means not having to wait in that line!

Drink specials TBA. We got Barfly to keep its kitchen open late, so all you late night snackers can order food in the bar area until closing time! Coffee will also be served.

A photographer will be taking pictures of everyone as they strut down the red carpet and we will be holding a costume contest around midnight (with prizes!) so start coming up with your costumes now.

Can't wait to see everyone for our biggest party of the semester!

As many of you may have heard, our VP of Student Orgs, Kevin Brown, will not be returning to USD this year. As a result, his position on the SBA Executive Board is now vacant, and must be filled as soon as possible in accordance with the SBA Bylaws (attached). Filling a vacancy on the Executive Board requires a majority vote of the SBA Council quorum present at the next SBA meeting, which will be next Monday, August 29th, at noon in Warren Hall 131. This means that only voting members of the SBA (Executive Board, class representatives, ABA representatives, and student org representatives) will be allowed to cast votes during the election. However, any USD law student may choose to run so long as they: 1) plan to serve out the rest of the 2011-2012 academic year, and 2) do not currently hold an elected position within the SBA or Honor Court, or currently serve as a member of the Elections Committee.

In accordance with the Bylaws, we will be taking nominations on the floor during the meeting during that SBA meeting prior to the actual vote. However, we ask that any student interested in running for the position please email the SBA Secretary ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) by Friday, August 26th, to ensure that you get on the agenda for the meeting (please include your name, email address, and class level (2L, 3L, etc.)). We would ideally like to provide each candidate 1-2 minutes to speak to the assembled SBA Council, but the meeting has a time limitation (12-1pm), so we may not be able to guarantee speaking time if there is a large number of candidates. If time looks like it will be an issue, priority will be given to students who declare in advance, because they will technically be on the agenda for the meeting. If time permits, any candidates nominated at the meeting will also be allowed to speak. The time allotted to each candidate will be based on the number of candidates, in order to provide as many as possible an opportunity to speak. All candidates, whether they declare beforehand or at the meeting, will be on the ballot for consideration.

The ballot for this election will use the preferential voting system. All voters will rank the candidates in order of preference. For the first round of the election, only your 1st choice will count. If no candidate has a majority after the 1st count, then the candidate with the lowest number of votes will be dropped from the list; anyone who had them as their #1 choice will have their vote reallocated to their #2 choice. If there is still no majority winner, the process repeats, dropping the candidate with the fewest votes and reallocating those votes to the voters' next preferred candidate until one candidate has achieved a majority. Please remember, only voting members of the SBA Council are allowed to vote in this election, but all USD law students are welcome to attend the meeting.

If you have any questions about either the position of VP of Student Orgs, or about the voting procedures, please contact the SBA President ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). If you want to declare your candidacy early, please contact the SBA Secretary ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). The full list of candidates will be announced at the SBA meeting on August 29th.

See SBA Bylaws, Article II, Section 1(c) for the duties of the VP of Student Orgs.

See SBA Bylaws, Article II, Section 3 for rules on filling vacancies on the SBA Executive Board.
